Fire Danger Period is
13 December 2023 to 1 May 2024

Fire Authorities have assessed Glenrowan and Hamilton Park as having a VERY HIGH bushfire risk.

Local residents and visitors should be prepared for fire and have a plan for when the Fire Danger Rating is SEVERE, EXTREME or CODE RED.

During the Fire Danger Period, you cannot light a fire in the open air unless you have a written permit from CFA or a Municipal Fire Prevention Officer.

Lighting a fire in the open air without a permit is an offence, and can bring a penalty of over $21,600 and/or 12 months imprisonment.

If you are issued a permit, you are still required to register your burn with the Burn-Off Notification Line on 1800 668 511.

Council regulations for burning off in Hamilton Park

Please note that Wangaratta City Council has recently updated By-laws relating to burning off.

Fires are prohibited without a permit from the council. Breaches of Local Law No.1 ‘Community Amenity’ may result in prosecution by WRCC.  You can find out more at the RCoW Website.

If you are planning to burn green waste, the following conditions apply when burning off:

  • Fire to be supervised by an adult at all times.
  • Notify Fire Permits Victoria a minimum 2 hours prior to lighting fire online at www.firepermits.vic.gov.au.
  • Adequate water supply/hose to be ready for use at all times to extinguish fire.
  • Burn off hours between 8.00am and 4.00pm on any given day.
  • Fire is to be extinguished prior to leaving site (must not smolder overnight).
  • Notify adjacent neighbours prior to lighting fire.
  • Only burn dry combustible materials.
  • Cleared fire break of a minimum of 3 metres all around.
  • The matter being burnt does not exceed 3 cubic meters.
